  • Question:

    Answer:
Our program will not create a bootable disk if drive A: is not your standard 1.44 MB 3.5" floppy drive, the LS-120 drive is not supported. Even though your operating system referred to the LS-120 as drive A:, it is not seen as a standard floppy drive and thus not supported. • Question:
What is a buffer-under run error, and how can it be resolved?

    Answer:
"A buffer under run error means that for some reason the flow of data from the hard disk to the CD Recorder was interrupted long enough for the CD Recorders buffer to be emptied, and writing halted. CD Writing is a real time process, which must run constantly without interruptions. If the buffer empties during a writing operation, your recordable (CD-R) disc may/will be ruined. Some ways to prevent buffer under run errors are as follows: Press CNTL/ALT/DEL and close all programs running in the background, EXCEPT Explorer, Systray & our software. Turn off any screen savers-Right click on the desktop, select properties, choose screen saver, click on screen saver drop down arrow and choose (none), then click Apply and press Okay. Turn off any Power Management-go to Start, go to Settings, choose Control Panel, click on Power Management, under Power Schemes-choose Home/Office Desk, click on the bottom 3 drop down arrows and choose never, click APPLY and then OK. Try copying to the hard drive first, then to the recorder. Try a different source disc Make sure everything is turned off in Systray (bottom RH corner) Click on CD Copy, go to Tools and click on Advanced, then slide the Cache small size file to 1024. If writing more than 10,000 small files, use Create ISO CD Image File. Go to File, and choose ISO CD Image File. Avoid recording across a network. If possible, log out of any networks. Use Disk Defragmenter or third-party software such as Diskeeper to defragment your hard drive. ".

What the difference in formatting the disc in ISO 9660 or UDF (Universal Disc Format)?

    Answer:
FileCD was originally designed to be compliant with ISO 9660 file system specifications, which was adopted by all Operating Systems that support CD-ROM devices. Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP, MacOS, Linux, and Unix all have "native" support of ISO 9660. FileCD has complete cross-platform compatibility: a FileCD disc can be read back in virtually all Operating Systems. NO SPECIAL READER SOFTWARE REQUIRED since the support of ISO 9660 is built-in. In FileCD 2.0 we also support formatting in UDF (Universal Disk Format). This allows users to freely exchange files from UDF formatted CD?s between other Packet-Writing software and FileCD 2.0 environments..

  • Question:
How much space is lost due to formatting and why?

Just like a floppy, we need to write a File Structure to the CDRW disc to allow files to be copied or erased on the disc. 700 MB 12cm CDRW disc has the formatted capacity of 574 Mbytes. 650 MB 12cm CDRW disc has the formatted capacity of 536 Mbytes. 200 MB 8cm CDRW disc has the formatted capacity of 163 Mbytes..

  • Question:

  • Question:
My home stereo won't play my CDs I burned - why not?

    Answer:
Make sure that the audio CD-R is finalized. Some home players will not recognize this disc if it is not finalized.

To check if the CD is finalized:

Open up CD Maker > Audio CD > Tools > Disc Info and Tools.

If the free space is "0" it means that the disk has been finalized.

Additionally, make sure you are not using a CD-RW disc, almost all home players and all car stereos cannot read a CD-RW disc due to it's lower reflectivity (70% less). CD-RW discs require a stronger laser to read these discs..

  • Question:
I just install the upgrade to 5.1.17 (or higher) and now none of my drives are detected by your software, why?

    Answer:
It may be do to the Adaptec writing plug-in with Media Player. We have found that the Media Player plug-in takes control of the ASPI layers that other programs install and disables them. This causes the program to not detect the CDRW drive. If you do have the Adaptec Plug-in you can correct the problem by uninstalling our software and the Plug-in. You can uninstall the plug-in by going to control panel, add/remove programs and double clicking on the Media Player entry. A list of media player components will appear. Select only the Adaptec CD Burning Plug-In and click ok. This will uninstall the plug-in. After uninstalling the plug-in reboot and then reinstall our software..

  • Question:
I just updated my software to your latest verion with Admistration Rights and now the software doesn"t see any of my drives, why?

    Answer:
The problem seems to be with our new ASPI driver with Admin Rights (NTIDRVR) and the existing Adaptec"s driver. If you are using Media Player 7.0 then Windows does not allow us to overwrite or append the Registry regarding Adaptec. Windows corrected this bug with the release of Media Player 7.1. Just update to Media Player 7.1 or higher to correct this problem..

When you format a disc to be used for File CD there is a file structure written to the disc. The total available disc space will be reduced to 498 MB on a 650MB disc..

  • Question:
When I use the Live Audio feature, why is the software telling me that my drive does not support 1x recording?

    Answer:
"Live Audio is a real time recording, which requires the drive to be able to record at 1x. If the drive cannot record at 1x then you will not be able to use the Live Audio feature in CD-Maker 2000 Professional. To verify if your drive has 1x capability, go to Tools and click on CD Drive Properties. ".

  • Question:
Why won"t my CD Rom drive read the FileCD disc?

    Answer:
CDRW discs can only be read by Multi-Read CD-ROM drives. The CD-ROM you use to read a FileCD is required to be multi-read capable in order to read CD-RW discs. Make sure that your reader is multi-read compatible. CD-ROM drives that are 20x and slower may not support Multi-Read, please check with the manufacture for your drives specifications..

  • Question:
Why do I get an error when I try to drag and drop a file to my CDRW drive?

    Answer:
The FileCD program does not provide for drive letter access. The FileCD program allows you to Drag and Drop files from the Windows Explorer, My Computer, or the Desktop directly to the FileCD window. Additionally in FileCD 2.0 you can right click on any file/s and select the "Send To" feature, which will in turn automatically write the file/s to your CDRW disc. The program does not support dragging and dropping a file from the Windows Explorer directly to the drive letter..

  • Question:
Why can"t I do a Quick format on a blank CDRW disc?

    Answer:
A CDRW disc must be fully formatted before you can use the Quick format in the future. A Quick format only erases/formats the TOC (Table of Contents) at the beginning of the disc. A Full format erases/formats the entire disc..

  • Question:
CD-Text did not record even though I checked the box for CD-Text.

  • Question:
I can"t see my writer in User mode using Windows 2000 or XP. If I login in as the Administrator everything works fine, why?

    Answer:
Our software requires access to the ASPI layer to talk to the Writer. The security built into Windows 2000 & XP prevents access to the ASPI layer unless you are logged in as the Administrator. Unfortunately this is a Windows limitation and is a common issue with other writing softwares. So the only workaround is to be login as the Administrator..

  • Question:
How do I compile my own CD selection from multiple CD"S?

    Answer:
You can do so easily with NTI CD-Maker 2000. You can do this in two ways:

    1. Use TAO (Track-At-Once) writing mode, copy from one source CD at a time, each time leave the target CD open (not finanlized) until the last source CD or when the target disc is full. OR

    2. Extract all wanted CD tracks as WAV files onto your hard disk. Then prepare your target CD layout using these WAV files..

  • Question:
    When I make a Mixed-Mode CD, I encounter buff-under-run, what can I do?

    Answer:
Mixed-Mode consists of a Data Session, followed by an Audio Session. At the transition point from Data to Audio, if the audio source (e.g. CD-ROM drive) doesn"t pick up fast enough, buffer-under-run on the target CD recorder will occur. We found that many CD drives could not make the transition from Sleep Mode to Data Transfer Mode fast enough.

Before hardware manufacturers can solve this performance problem, a temporary solution is to use hard disk instead of CD drive as the audio source: First extracting CD tracks into WAV files and put them on your hard disk; and then prepare your Audio Layout using these WAV files..

  • Question:
Is it easy to make a CD recording?

  • Question:
If I write MP3 files to the CD, will they work in my audio CD player?

    Answer:
Yes, CD Maker 2000 will write MP3 files to the CD in Digital Audio (CD-DA) automatically and on-the-fly. Your audio player must support CD-R/RW by having multi-read capability, however. Most new generation audio CD players have this capability.Question:
    How can I write MP3 to CD-DA on-the-fly at high speed (e.g. 8X, 12X, or 16X)?

    Answer:
You need a fast enough CPU to be able to decode MP3 on-the-fly and burn at high speed at the same time. We recommend that you meet the following requirements on processor speed:

    MP3 to CDDA on-the-fly Speed_______CPU Requirement

    ----------------------------------------------

    8X_________________________________333 MHz P-II

    12X________________________________650 MHz P-III

    16X________________________________800 MHz P-III.

  • Question:
How do I make an MP3 CD?

    Answer:
An "MP3 CD" is actually a Data CD filled with MP3 files. With NTI CD-Maker 2000, you can easily make an MP3 CD: simply select "Data CD" from the home screen, drag-and-drop MP3 files from source pane to the CD layout pane, and start recording!

Alternatively, if you want the CD you make to play on a regular audio CD player, you should make an "Audio CD", with input from your MP3 files of course! That"s also easy to do: slect "Audio CD" from the home screen, drag-and-drop source MP3 files onto the target CD layout, and then start recording!.

  • Question:
    I have a 12X CD-RW drive but writing at 12X fails, why?

    Answer:
The fact that you have purchased a 12X or 16X CD-RW drive unfortunately doesn"t mean that you can use it at the highest available speed: Your PC system must be fast enough to enable CD writing at high speed.

We"d highly recommend that your system should meet the following requirements for high-speed CD writing:

    (1) Processor: Pentium-III 450MHz or above

    (2) Memory: 64MB of RAM

    (3) Source CD-ROM Speed: 48X

Even when your system meets the requirements above, there is still no gurantee that you will be able to write at high speed. The reason is that your system"s performance is a function of many more variables. If you are having problems with 12X/16X, we recommend that you find ways to improve your system"s performance by configuration. For example, connect the source CD-ROM and target CD-RW on different IDE channels, etc..

  • Question:
What are the minimum system requirements for high speed CD writing (e.g. 12X, 16X)?

  • Question:
Why do I keep getting a "hardware error no reason" error?

    Answer:
The most common cause is due to defective media (blank CD). This could be one bad disc or a batch of bad discs. If you get this error try re-recording on a fresh disc preferably from a different batch and brand. Another cause for this Error is a dirty lens on your CD-Recorder or Rewriter. If the lens is dirty, it can cause the laser to not be able to correctly focus on the media. We recommend contacting the drive manufacturer for suggestions on cleaning and general maintenance of your CD-R/RW drive. The only other cause would be a defective unit..

  • Question:
Why does the software keep generating a "Power Calibration" or "CD Fixation" error?

    Answer:
CD-R discs have a section outside the standard recording area called the Program Calibration Area (PCA), which is used to adjust the laser for the brand of media you"re using. A CD fixation error means that the laser does not have the ability to close the session anymore. It also means that when the laser is trying to calibrate (power calibration) itself, the calibration is not balanced - it is failing and that is why the laser cannot close the entire disk. The error indicates that the CD-R drive is having trouble calibrating the power setting. Try different brands of media, and if that doesn"t work you should have the drive checked by a repair facility..

  • Question:
    Can I copy Playstation CDs?

    Answer:
As the NTI software was neither intended nor designed to back-up Sony Playstation CDs, this is something that we have never tested. However, we"ll be happy to hear from you your test results..

  • Question:
Why am I getting an MFC42.dll error when I launch the software?

  • Question:
NTI Backup Now Frequently Asked Questions

    Answer:
    1) How do I unschedule a backup job?
Answer: To stop your scheduled jobs that you do not want to run, you can delete the jobs from the Job Management screen (the first button from the left under the menu or from the View menu Jobs) and right click on the job in the left pane. Then you can click on delete job. This will delete the job and stop it from running again.

    2) I backed up some files as administrator on another computer and I'd like to restore them to a different computer. I am able to successfully restore all files with no errors, but whenever I attempt to access a file (Word, Excel, Adobe, etc), the program cannot open it and gives me an 'access denied' error. Is there any way I can change the permissions so I can access the restored files?
Answer: Backup Now backs up the NTFS security properties when it backs up your files. When you restored to another computer the accounts referenced in the security properties do not exist on the new computer. The NTFS security property looks at accounts by their Security Account Manager (SAM) ID in the registry. You may have an account with the same name, but the SAM ID is different. When you open the file’s properties and go to the security tab you will see the referenced accounts SAM IDs like this "HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1078081533-1801674531-682003330-1004", but not the names because the SAM ID does not exist on the local system. You need to use an Administrative account and go into the advanced section of the Security properties. In the advanced section of the security properties you need to go to the owner tab and select the account that should own the file, such as your account. If all of your restored files are under a common folder you can do this from the folder and select the option to "replace owner on sub containers and objects". This will set the owner the same on al sub-folders and files. If you are using your own account to do this Windows will give you the option to give yourself full permission to the files at the same time, if you are not using your account you will need to close the file’s/folder’s properties window and re-open it to give yourself full permission to the files. Once this is done you will be able to access your files.

    3) I am unable to restore from my external hard drive to my original location. I repeatedly get the same message in the final step "unable to locate source file".
Answer: When you select the backup file in step 1 do you then select the files to restore from the selected backup file? If you have not, that is why you keep getting that message. You need to select the backup file to restore from and then select the files/folders you want to restore from the backup file.

    4) Back up hangs on selected files. i.e. when trying to back up entire hard drive O/S drive hangs on a file called hiberfil.sys When doing a back up of user data hangs on *.tmp files. I need to back up the entire hard drive over a net work and according to your documentation the advanced version can open system files and in use files for back up purposes. But it doesn't seem to be working for me.
Answer: Even with the Open File function, there are still some files that Windows will not allow to be backed up. One of them is the Hiberfil.sys file which is only used to save the contents of your RAM when you hibernate. Another is the Pagefile.sys file, which is your Virtual RAM. They do not need to be baked up. The *.tmp files ate temp files that also do not need to be backed up. If you need a complete backup of your OS drive you should use the Drive based backup, which will create an image backup of your selected drive/partition.

    5) Have been able to back but cannot open backup file to confirm back up success--the error message reads there needs to be a program associated with the NTI file to open, and I don't know where or how to do that.
Answer: The message you indicated that you go in your initial request is from Windows telling you that the NBF file that you double clicked on does not have a program associated with it to open the file by double clicking on the file. To open a NBF file, you need to first open Backup Now and then go to the restore function. There you can browse to your NBF file to select it and you will see all the files that were backed up into the NBF file. Then you can select files from the backed up files and then select where and how to restore the files and finally you can restore the files. If you want to fully test the backup, you should select a few files from the beginning, a few files from the middle and a few files from the end of the backup.

    6) The display of the program is not right.
Answer: Please make sure that the DPI setting for your display is set to 96 DPI (100%).

    7) Does Backup Now support Rev Drive?
Answer: Rev Drive is not seen as a hard drive and is not supported in any of our applications at this time.

    8) When I save the reports to my c drive how do i erase the stuff I don’t want to keep? It’s filling up my C drive.
Answer: When you run the backups, Backup Now 5.5 saves the report folder in the Backup Now 5 folder in the NewTech Infosystems folder inside the Program Data folder (C:\Program Data\NewTech Infosystems\Backup Now 5). The Program Data folder may be hidden. You can delete any of the report files you want.

    9) I selected incremental backup and Backup Now did a full backup on my C:\Users folder I'm not sure how to do subsequent incremental backups on the same folder such that Backup Now only backs up files that have changed.
Answer: When you setup an incremental backup job, it will run a full backup the first time only. This is because an incremental backup needs a full backup for a baseline backup. When you tell it to run the backup from the Job Management screen or when the next scheduled backup time occurs, the incremental backup will run as an incremental backup.

    10) I am doing a new file based backup, and when I select 'Network Drive' as the destination, nothing appears, I cannot see my network mapped drives. These drives are connected - they show up under Computer and are browse able/writable.
Answer: If your network drive requires a username and password to connect and it is different from what you use to log on to Windows with, you should create a username and password on your network drive that matches what you use to log onto Windows. This may be what is causing your issue. You can test it by logging onto the network drive and then opening Backup Now.

    11) How do I do an Image Backup and how do I restore an Image Backup?
Answer: To create a drive image backup, on step one of creating a new backup job, you need to select the Drive Based Backup job type by clicking on the Drive-Based Backup tab. Then you need to select the hard drives you want to backup. Then you would go to step 2 to select where you want to backup the drives to, this cannot be any of the drives that you are backing up. Then you would go to step 3 to select when to run the backup and if you want a full backup every time, or an incremental backup every time after the initial backup. Then you would start the job. To restore you will need to boot from the bootable recovery disc that was made either at the end of the backup, or from the Utilities section of Backup Now 5.5 Advanced. If your drive has only one partition, the new drive can be automatically partitioned. If not you will need to open the Command Prompt from the tools menu. There you will need to use the disk part utility to partition the drive properly and then you can restore one partition at a time to the partitions you select.

    12) I would like to know how to verify backup jobs.
Answer: As with all Backup products, you can run a test restore to verify your backups. This is the best verification test. However in Backup Now 5 you can click on the Option button when creating or editing a job and select the option that says "Compare original and backup files to verify consistency."

    13) With a previous version of Backup Now I was able to create a backup job files that could launch a backup by double-clicking the file. Is it possible to do this with the current version?
Answer: When you create a backup job and start it in Backup Now 5, the job is automatically saved and is available to run at any time by going into the Job Management screen either by clicking on the Jobs button on the toolbar (the first one on the left), or from the menu (View->Jobs). There you can select the job in the left pane and right click on it in the left pane (in Backup Now 5.5 you can also click on the operation button) and select Run Job Now from the menu.

    14) I don't receiving alerts. Also Where I configure the SMTP server, if it is needed.
Answer: If you want to use the email notification option, you need to have Microsoft Outlook installed with an account setup. Then the email notification will work.

    15) Backup Now is not recognizing the network drive?
Answer: For the network drive to be recognized, it must be mapped to a drive letter.

    16) Can I backup the registry with Backup Now 5 Advanced Edition?
Answer: To be able to backup your registry, you need to use the Drive Based backup. This will backup everything on the selected drive partitions.

    17) On program startup I get error message 'Unable to create ShadowSvc.JobController instance [hr=-2147023838] the service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled device associated with it.' When I try to START program message 'Unable to start scheduler.
Answer: The error message you are getting indicates that the service is disabled. You need to open the Windows control Panel and go into the Administrative Tools section. Then you need to run the Services function and scroll down to the NTI Backup Now 5 Shadow service, double-click on the service and change it from disabled to automatic.

    18) How can I set my backup plan so I do a full backup of selected folders once at start of each month, and then do incremental twice a week? Then repeat the following month?
Answer: You cannot have one backup run a full backup once a month and incremental twice a week. You need to setup one full backup job that runs once a month and a second incremental backup that runs twice weekly. When you restore, you will need to restore the most recent full backup and then manually restore each incremental backup after in order by restoring each from the NBF files not the NBS files that will restore the initial full backup and then reach successive incremental backup automatically..

  • Question:
I have a drive that has multiple partitions. Can I do a drive image of the entire drive? Can I do more than one partition at the same time?

    Answer:
No, the program will only allow you to do a drive image backup of one partition at a time. It will not allow you to clone a hard drive that has multiple partitions..

  • Question:
Can I do a drive image backup and restore of an active partition to an external hard drive?

    Answer:
You can do a drive image backup to an external hard drive. However you would not be able to restore it to an active partition. The reason is that in order to restore an active partition it must be done from DOS which does not support external devices. Since you will not be able to access the drive, you would not be able to restore the image backup..

  • Question:
How long will the backup take per disc?

    Answer:
The performance speed will depend on your system, your drive, and mostly your media. Pentium 4, 52x24x52, using 52x CDR media = 10 minutes per disc Pentium 4, 52x24x52, using 24x CDRW media = 25 minutes per disc Pentium 4, 52x24x52, using 10x CDRW media = 55 minutes per disc Pentium 4, 52x24x52, using 4x CDR media = 1.5 hrs or more per disc. Also note that 7200-RPM Hard Drives are much faster than 5400-RPM Hard Drives, which will cause faster or slower backups. Words of wisdom: 1. If your data is worth backing up then it is worth backing up on quality media. 2. Non-Branded/Inexpensive media generally denotes poor quality media. 3. Your backup is only as good as its restore; always test your backups prior to needing them..

  • Question:
Why does my drive not work with the program even though it is on the supported drive list?

    Answer:
The problem would depend on the error code that is generated by the program. The most common causes for failure are as follows: Using bad or incompatible blank discs. Make sure you use good quality discs with your writer. Multiple writing programs installed on the system causing a conflict. We do not recommend installing multiple writing programs on your system. An outdated firmware revision on the drive. We test our programs with drives that have the latest firmware revision loaded. Firmware revision are released by drive manufacturer to correct problems with a drive that were not detected prior to its release..

  • Question:
Why can't I bootup using the Emergency Recovery CD created by NTI Drive Backup!?

    Answer:
If you have two hard drives connected to the primary IDE channel it causes a memory allocation problem. Try disconnecting your primary slave drive or change the position to secondary master..

  • Question:
Why do I get "File Open Failed" or "Access Violation" errors on the log?

    Answer:
In most cases our program can back up open files, however some system files (Windows NT/200/XP) and possibly some application files may cause a sharing violation. The sharing violation error basically indicates that the file could not be accessed at the time it was being backed up or when trying to compare the file. The main purpose for File Level backup is to backup Data files. For system and application files we would highly recommend using teh Image Level backup. (4-28-03).

  • Question:
Why does my scheduled backup fail to run at the scheduled time?

    Answer:
Make sure you are logged in as an administrator before you leave on the day the backup is scheduled to run. The system must be left logged in with administrative rights. If you leave the computer logged in as a user the backup will not be performed. The problem may be due to a program that you have running in the background interfering. Make sure you do not have any programs running in the background such as antivirus or crashguard programs. (4-28-03).

  • Question:
Can I backup on Windows NT/2000 or XP and restore on another system running Windows 95/98 or ME?

    Answer:
No, a backup done on either windows NT/2000 or XP can only be restored on to a system running either NT/2000 or XP. The reason is that when Backup Now! 95/98/ME was written it was designed specifically for 95/98 and it used 8bit packets. Since Windows NT/2000 and XP supports longer filenames it required larger packets. Backup Now! NT/2000/XP uses 16bit packets. Since 8 will go into 16 then a backups done on windows 98 or ME can be restored on windows 2000. But a backups done on Windows NT/2000 or XP cannot be restored on windows 98 since 16 does not fit into 8. (4/28/03).

  • Question:
I am backing up 600MB of MP3 files or other compressed files using maximum compression but the back up size increases to 650MB instead of getting smaller, why?

    Answer:
Since compressed files (AVI, MP3, JPG, GIF, DIXV, ect.) are usually as compressed as they can get; using compression on compressed files will actually increase the size due to the overhead of the compression program. When backing up mostly compressed files it is recommend to set our program to "No Compression" to save space...

  • Question:
When doing an Image backup with Windows 2000 (Service Pack 2 installed) the restored Image fails to boot.?

    Answer:
The problem seems to be with the additional security added by the new Service Pack. The are two solutions for this issue. 1. Remove Service Pack 2 from Windows 2000. If you do not wish to remove SP2 from your system you can do the following: 2. Make sure the drive/partition that you restore the Image to is exactly the same size as the original drive/partition. This will get around the added security of the new Service Pack..

  • Question:
What is Packet-Writing/FileCD and why should I use it?

    Answer:
The original purpose of ?Packet-Writing", as initially designed by Sony with the assistance of NTI, was to reduce "buffer under runs"; a phenomenon that was plaguing the burgeoning CD-Recordable market. Two other useful applications for ?Packet Writing? are to allow your computer to save files individually to your CDRW drive as if it was a hard drive, and to reliably multitask (running more than one application while burning a CD). Later, as CD-Recordable technologies advanced, "Packet Writing" found its application as a "floppy replacement" (i.e. to use CDRW discs as if they were floppy diskettes), which is considered a "killer app" for CDRW..

  • Question:
Why am I getting an "insufficient disc space" or "incompatible writing format" error when I try to write to a new formatted disc?

    Answer:
Make sure you are using a blank, unformatted disc. The error you are seeing is usually generated when a disc is being used that has been previously formatted by Direct CD or a similar program. The reason for this is that formatting a CD-R/RW disc is NOT like formatting a floppy disk. When you format a blank CDRW disc with a particular piece of software, a UNIQUE file structure is written to that disc so that it can only be used by that specific piece of software. Most likely, that specific file structure is incompatible with Backup NOW!. To fix this problem, try doing a quick erase to the CDRW disc, it that is still unsuccessful, then do a full erase on the CDRW disc..
